What to know about cataract surgery

Image
Cataracts are cloudy or opaque areas on the lens of the eye. These cloudy areas may affect a person’s vision. Cataracts are slow forming. They usually develop in people aged 55 years and older, though younger people can also develop cataracts. There is no known way to prevent cataracts from forming but wearing sunglasses and quitting smoking can help slow down their development. Currently, surgery to remove the lens and replace it with a synthetic one is the only treatment option available. This article outlines the two different types of cataract surgery available. We describe the procedures and provide information on what people can expect before, during, and after surgery. We also outline the potential risks and complications involved. Who might need surgery and why? Not everyone who has cataracts needs cataract surgery. In the early stages, cataracts may cause only minor issues, such as nearsightedness. An eye doctor may be able to correct these symptoms wit...

How Long Does LASIK Last?

Image
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a surgical procedure that can improve your vision. It permanently reshapes the tissue in the front of your eye, and these changes last your whole life. However, most people’s vision gets worse over time as part of the natural aging process. LASIK can’t stop this, so your vision may become blurry again as you get older. According to the American Refractive Surgery Council, your vision may change over time if the initial condition that affected your vision — your myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism (blurry vision) — continues to progress. This progression can cause your vision to change. Another ...

What Your Eyes Say About Your Health?

Image
Do you ever look in the mirror and see that your eyes are red? Or droopy? Or extra crusty? Sometimes a cold compress and a trip to the drugstore are all you need. Other times, it's a good idea to see your doctor. How can you tell the difference? A sneak peek at some common conditions will help you know if it’s something minor or worth a second look. Redness “I think the most common eye problem people experience is a red eye,” says Rebecca J. Taylor, MD, an ophthalmologist in Nashville. “A red eye with a blotch of blood on the white part of the eye may look really scary, but it’s usually just a bruise under the surface of the eye. We call it a subconjunctival hemorrhage." It should clear up in a few weeks, she says. If both eyes are red, itchy, and watery, that could just be allergies, Taylor says. These symptoms, are usually caused by environmental (seasonal) allergies, but they could mean you’re allergic to a product you used. Over-the-counter tears wi...
