Is Lasik Eye Surgery For Me?

Image
Undergoing Lasik eye surgery is a life-changing experience, and the results of this vision correction procedure are often astounding to patients, who typically experience the benefits shortly after the eye procedure is performed. While some may expect laser surgery to be painful, it is in fact both painless and safe. Lasik surgery is also a very short outpatient procedure, the procedure itself lasting only a few short minutes. Laser eye surgery treatment is a rather simple process and begins when a local anesthetic is administered to numb the eye. Once anesthetized, the surgeon will create what is referred to as the corneal flap. He or she will then reshape the cornea, a change that will allow your eye to see more clearly as light will now be reflected by the cornea at the proper angle. Once the reshaping is complete, your eye doctor will put the corneal flap back into place and seal it. Shortly thereafter, patients are usually free to go home.   LASIK (acronym for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a refractive eye surgery that is performed to correct eyesight defects such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. After this the flap is placed into its original position. It is done to improve the way the eye focuses ligh...

During the procedure you’ll be awake, but you may receive a sedative medication to help you relax. It won’t be painful, but you might feel some tugging or pressure on your eye. The basic steps in the procedure are as follows: 1. Anesthetic eye drops are placed in both eyes to numb them. 2. Your eye is held open with an eyelid holder. 3. A flap is made in the outer layer of your cornea using a small blade or a laser. This is when you might feel some pressure and discomfort. Conventional (bladed) LASIK . A device called a microkeratome is placed on your eye. It consists of a ring attached to a very small blade. Suction from the ring lifts your cornea and the blade cuts a flap. All-laser LASIK. A femtosecond laser sends out energy pulses toward your cornea that gently lifts its outer layer. It then makes a cut, creating a flap. 4.  The flap is gently lifted. 5. Your cornea is reshaped using one of the following techniques Excimer laser. This is used to remove tissue from your cornea...
