After cataract surgery: Things to be taken care of


·         Cataract is a condition in which eye lens becomes cloudy which results in blurry vision.
·         Cataract surgery is done for the treatment of cataracts which involves removal of eye lens and replacement of it with artificial lens called intra ocular lens that are generally made up of silicone and plastic.
·         After cataract surgery, ophthalmologist gives verbal and written instructions regarding post operative care of eyes till the complete healing of the eye.

1.       Dark eye glasses are given to wear during daytime and eye shield at night for several days. The eye glasses and eye shield should be washed with soap and water followed by drying prior to use.
2.       Eye drops are given by doctor to prevent infection, reduce postoperative inflammation and control eye pressure. Instillation of eye drops must be according to the schedule prescribed by the doctor. Hands must be washed with soap and water before instilling eye drops and care should be taken not to contaminate the tip of the nozzle of eyedropper bottle. Eyes should be closed for 5minutes after instillation of eye drops.
3.       Splashing of water into the operated eye must be totally avoided.
4.       Patient can take below neck bath but head bath should be done only after 3-4weeks.
5.       Application of Cosmeticson the operated eye can be done only after 4-5weeks.
6.       To clean the eye, eye is closed and a tissue paper can be used to wipe it from inside corner of the eye.
7.       Lying on the side of affected eye on the night after surgery must be avoided.
8.       Clean damp washcloth can be used to clean the morning discharge from the operated eye.
9.       Any heavy work like lifting objects or strenuous activities must be completely restricted for few weeks or as instructed by the doctor.
10.   Light activities like reading, writing, watching TV, walking can be resumed.
11.   Swimming or using hot tub must not be done for at least 2weeks.
12.   Rubbing of eyes with hands or handkerchief should not be done.
13.   Deep coughing, sneezing and straining while passing stools should be avoided for a month.
14.   Exposure of eyes to irritants such as dust and wind should be avoided for few weeks after surgery.
15.   Few symptoms like watering of eyes, redness, itching and glare may be experienced after surgery which will eventually disappear.
16.   Bending must be avoided for few weeks.
17.   Alcoholic beverages and cigarette smoking should be avoided.
18.   Visitors with conjunctivitis and other eye infections should be avoided.
