LASIK EYE SURGERY IN INDORE:

WHAT IS LASIK?

Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis(LASIK), is a surgical procedure which is used for correction of vision in people suffering from refractive defects such as Myopia(Near-sightedness), Hypermetropia(Far-sightedness), and Astigmatism(Corneal Defect).

LASIK surgery provides reduction in the power or even freedom from spectacles to the patients and is of great aid in gaining self-confidence as well.

LASIK is now one of the most common surgical procedures around the world and is widely used for correction of refractive disorders.

It is an outpatient surgical procedure that takes around 10-15 minutes for each eye and the patient is able to see again within hours after the surgery.

The actual laser exposure is less than a minute for each eye.

HOW DOES LASIK WORK?

LASIK works on the principle of sculpting and remodelling of cornea using Excimer Laser(an ultraviolet laser) which delivers the laser correction(Photoblation) into the thickness of cornea.

Procedure:

LASIK surgery comprises of three main steps namely:

• Formation of Flap (pane).
• Photoblation(Excimer laser).
• Restoration of the Flap.

The procedure starts with application of a local anaesthetic in the form of eye drops which numbs the area of surgery and is done with the patient wide awake along with medications that help the patient relax during the procedure.

To begin with the procedure a layer of corneal tissue is removed to create a circular flap (or pane) by the help of a special automated knife (Microkeratome) or laser (femtosecond).

Microkeratome is a conventional technique and is less preferred than Femtosecond.

.Femtosecond uses multiple short pulses (the flap is kept in place by hinge tissue which later helps in restoration of the flap after surgery).  The eye is held firmly by the use of a suction ring exerting pressure on the eyeball and causing momentary loss of vision in the eye.

Excimer laser is then used to remodel the corneal stroma(layers under the flap) by programmed machines under the careful supervision of surgeon. This process is termed as Photoblation.

The Excimer laser beam vaporizes the corneal tissue without any burning or cutting and it does not affect any other part of the eye because of its specific wavelength that prevents it from passing through the corneal layers.

The amount of corneal tissue to be removed by Excimer laser is determined by factors like- power of specs/contact lenses, shape of corneal surface and the nature of defect and is pre-calculated by the surgeon before the procedure.

Finally the flap is restored in its original position and leaves no stitch marks.

The adhesion of flap with the corneal tissue begins minutes after the surgery and heals completely in a time of few weeks to months.

Essentials of LASIK surgery:

• LASIK is performed after 18 years of age to make sure that the vision is stabilized.
• A test called Wavefront Test is conducted to determine the trajectory of light inside the patient’s eye.
• Touching and Rubbing the eye/s must be avoided as it may cause serious complications. Protective shells are given to the patients for their first nights after the surgery.
• Patients are advised to wear UV-Tinted glasses that prevent the eyes from harmful UV rays.
• Eye Drops are given to the patients to avoid infection and irritation.
• Patients are advised to avoid Driving, Swimming, Contact sports, use of csmetics and make-up.
• There are two basic types LASIK surgeries namely:
1.) Conventional or Blade LASIK
2.) All Laser or Femtolaser LASIK

Type of laser surgery depends on various factors that determine the severity of the condition and desired measures.
